t was a long winter for May and Lucy, they hadn’t work with the students since Christmas break. Four months without me telling them “Girls we’re going to work today”. Every time I say those words the girl’s their ears perk up and they are heading for the door, waiting for the door to open and be on their way.
Not sure how they would be after being away so long, I was expecting to have to remind them of the rules. They came into the classroom like it was just last week they were there. They sniffed around as they are usually allowed to do, so they are familiar with the surrounding before we begin our activities. While the dogs were doing room check one of the students got a bowl of water for the dogs, then went into the bag of toys and treats and help get things set up for our time there.
The students were delighted to see the dogs back, as was May and Lucy. We left May to keep one student busy playing ball. Lucy walked the hallways of the school with 2 students. It was so good to have the students enjoying our visit and even greater to see how much the girls were glad to be back to work.
We are planning to make our visits every Monday morning until the end of the school year. Nice to have us all back on a schedule.

Good visit as always. Some people always tell us how it makes their day to see us.
Today we had only 2 students, which really worked well! We were able to give each student more attention and each student had their own dog. Our walk was very broken up by stops and visits into different classrooms. Usually this set the dogs and the students back, but with only 2 students it was a good exercise for the students and the dogs. I try to walk behind the students and let them direct the dogs, in what they want to have the dogs do. It’s important that I don’t speak and break the communication between the student and the dogs. Lucy often will look back to see if I’m still following along but it’s best I try not to say anything or she will break to listen for my commands. May doesn’t care if I’m following or not, she just loves exploring the hallways with anyone.

There days that no one is in the mood.
Our last visit to the Gateway Program had been before the Christmas break, which meant that 3 weeks had passed since our last visit. When May, Lucy and I arrived and entered the classroom, the girls were so excited. May gearing up for a great game of ball and Lucy ready for tricks, walks and treats. The students were in each of their own spaces and they weren’t geared up for dog business. May ran over to one of the students with her ball in her mouth and dropped the ball at his feet to begin the game. But the student wasn’t ready for dog play and turned his back on her. May gave him one more try, as if she was in disbelief that he didn’t want to play ball. He turned away even more. Two other students were in the room but no one seemed to be very interested in having dog time.
I decided that we needed to give the students time to decide on their own, if they wanted to play or walk with the dogs. After awhile one of the students couldn’t resist the looks from May and decided he would like to take the dogs for a walk. It was a great walk and shows how animals can make you do things you don’t think you want to and then it turns out to be a great time.

Clover learned the song Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes and read a book about a pig in the middle of the road.
